If you’ve ever driven in or around Warrick County, Spencer County, Vanderburgh County, Boonville, Chandler, Newburgh, Lynnville, Dale, Santa Clause, or Darmstadt, it is likely that you have driven on pavement produced and paved by Metzger Construction. Metzger Construction is one of the oldest and to our knowledge the last remaining asphalt contractor that is still 100% family owned and operated. Our team has decades of experience and knowledge that we apply to every resurface, reconstruction, or new construction job.
The Overlaying or Resurfacing Process (Applies to Roads, Driveways, Commercial, and Residential)
Overlaying, or resurfacing, is a process of road, driveway, or parking lot maintenance that involves resurfacing older, unlevelled or worn out blacktop. The process always starts with some prep work including but not limited to:
- placing proper road work signage
- relocating the edge of pavement
- transitional milling or full depth patching
After the surfaces are prepped, a tack coat (oil) is usually applied to the old blacktop. Next, trucks arrive to the job carrying blacktop made from a hot mix plant. This material is dumped into a paver, paved, and then compacted by a roller. The final steps may includes adding new rock to the shoulder or edge of the road, striping, and installing bumper blocks or signs.
Reconstruction or new construction Process
Some roads are beyond repair and require reconstruction in order to accommodate growing traffic . Many of these types of jobs require complete or partial excavation of the old road. They also may require the addition of curb, drainage pipes, sidewalks, etc. Each reconstruction may demand different materials and specifications. For this reason, in most cases engineering firms are tasked with the design. Metzger Construction is familiar and experienced with many if not all steps in a road and drainage reconstruction process and are operators and laborers are equipped with the skill to complete the job on time.

Once on the job, our skilled operators implement tried and true techniques for safely,quickly, and neatly preparing the subgrade, adding stone and getting that stone at the proper elevation the first time in order minimize project duration. From time to time, inconsistent or changing standards regarding expectable subgrade conditions, rock depth, and or pavement depth have occasionally left both developers and contractors puzzled. Metzger Construction can help navigate these pitfalls in order to give both the developer and the county or city inspectors a satisfactory road.
As with most things in this world, blacktop will eventually need maintenance. Common problems with blacktop include potholes, cracks, blown out areas, and deformation. These problems are caused by extreme temperatures, heavy traffic, power steering and or subgrade issues. Often, simple treatments like pothole patching, crack sealing, striping or sealcoating can fix problem areas with very little cost. Other times, the cracking, potholes and blown out areas are a symptom of a bigger problem lying underneath the surface. In these instances, methods such as mill patching or full depth patching may be required to fix the issues. We have the tools and know how to handle all of your maintenance needs. Although we do not provide sealcoating or striping service directly, we have trusted subcontractors and/or recommendations for trusted contractors who are professional and timely.
